How can you tell the difference?
There are many ways to tell the difference between good quality and bad quality fabric, but we recommend looking at these six elements: durability, feel, stitching, colour, drape and weave patterns.
- Durability: A bad quality fabric wears and tears out easily. A good quality fabric holds its shape well.
- Feel: A bad quality fabric feels scratchy and rough to the touch, while a good quality fabric is smooth and soft.
- Colour: Cheap dyes fade quickly on bad quality fabrics, but the good quality fabric has a vibrant shade that is consistent, as it does not fade easily.
- Drape: Do a quick drop test: a bad quality fabric hangs stiffly, while a good quality fabric drapes gracefully.
- Stitching: This is perhaps the easiest to spot. Look closely at the piece of fabric, as good quality fabric has even seams with strong stitching, with no loose threads or gaps. A bad quality fabric is the opposite, and there are visible gaps or loose threads.
- Weave Pattern: Similar to stitching, the better the fabric quality, the more tightly and evenly knitted it is.
