Serving its functional purpose of blocking out the dreaded afternoon sun from evading your privacy to its aesthetic functionality, either to liven up a room or to match the deco and paint. Curtains can make or break a room and it all comes down to choosing the right curtain with the right material. When it comes to window treatments, it's a matter of colour and material, length and lining, and custom-made versus off-the-shelf.

Let’s face it; choosing the perfect curtain material for your home is a difficult process. It boils down to the type of fabric that you pick as it will affect various factors, such as how the curtains will hang, how much sunlight will it block and how long your curtains will last.

Polyester Curtains

If you are thinking of an easy to maintain easy to find material, polyester may just be the right choice for you. One of the most common fabrics used for curtains because of its durability and easy maintenance, it will make a perfect fit for your bedrooms and living rooms. However, depending on the location you wish to place your new curtains, the materials you choose may need to be suited to that location. Take for example, avoid using polyester fabric for kitchen curtains as the fabric absorbs odours and the material is flammable. Not so good to be cooking beside polyester!

Cotton Curtains

Another fabric you can look in to is cotton, as it is the perfect fabric to fit in with a modern decor but can also suit a traditional style with its versatility. Using cotton will give your curtains a clean, crisp feel that adds freshness to any room. The amazing thing about cotton is the range of weaves you can get, making it a very customizable fabric to suit your needs. You may choose a tighter weave if you want some privacy or to block sunlight, opt for sheer cotton if you want to make a room feel light and airy.

Linen Curtains

Despite it being a billowy fabric, Linen is still able to offer a tailored look. Making it great for dining rooms or a modern living room. If you are a sunlight loving person, the sheerness of the fabric will allow a good amount of sunlight to stream through, filling any room with natural light. However, the fabric can wrinkle easily so it isn’t the best choice to use it for decorating your children’s room or rooms with a lot of traffic.

Silk Curtains

As you would expect, silk adds a luxury to anything it is made from. If you would love to exude a heighten sense of indulgence or creating a romantic setting, you may consider using this valued fabric as one of your options. Draping excellently and flawlessly, its softness and flow is pleasing to the eyes and touch as well! However, do note that it may get a little pricey in terms of maintenance and is vulnerable to sun damage so you may want to consider adding a lining to the silk to protect the fabric.
