The world of fabrics is a wide and diverse one, with a wide variety of choices to choose from which depends entirely on your preference. No matter if you are an aspiring seamstress or just love picking up a needle or thread as a hobby, picking out a fabric for your new curtain or looking for something for your new bedsheets. Knowing your fabrics is somewhat a skill which needs to be picked up, one way or another.

Now, when it comes to fabrics, one may think that it is a complicated process as there are so many factors involved when picking the right one. Nevertheless, it is still a much needed skill because no one knows what you need other than yourself! Thus, even if you are not looking at opening your own fabric factory, having a basic knowledge is still necessary. Not knowing the properties of different fabrics can lead to a disastrous experience. But fret not, as we are going to highlight a few need to know fabrics to get you on your way to choosing the right type of fabric for your needs.

Gent / Collection

Cotton

Let’s talk about some of the most commonly used fabrics in the market- cotton. You can find cotton in almost anything, cotton t-shirts, pants, formal wear, you name it. Cotton is comfortable and soft while also allowing your skin to breathe by dissipating sweat quickly. Despite being relatively common, it is durable and can last for many years to come. However, this fluffy fabric does has its downsides as well, items made out of 100% cotton are prone to wrinkles and require constant ironing. When washing cotton fabrics, do take note that it will shrink during its first wash, so do make sure to make room for some shrinking when taking your measurements.

Polyester

Despite its reputation of being a warm fabric and also its low resistance to heat, the textile does has its plus points as well. Its most outstanding property is that it is able to maintain its shape fairly well, so if you are not a fan of ironing, polyester is the way to go. Being a man-made fabric, it is quite a tough cookie to crack and gives it a resistant to biological damage. That being said, if you have anything made from polyester, rest assured that it is going to take washing quite well. You can cross fading caused by washing off your mind as it is some of the most durable fabrics out there.

Silk

Ever wondered how silk has that light and smooth texture and how it is made? Well, we have to break it to you, silk is actually made from fibres collected from the Chinese Silk Worm. That’s right, they are spun by thousands of little worms to create a smooth, shiny and sleek fabric. Due to its light density, it allows the fabric to absorb moisture, making it cool in hotter climates and warm in colder weather. Not forgetting its highly absorbent properties which allows it to be dyed in a multitude of colours. Do take note that silk is an extremely delicate fabric, so it is best to take extra care when cleaning it.

Wool

Another fabric made with the help of our furry friends, wool is obtained from a variety of animal coats but most commonly from sheep. Their coats have little curls in them which traps air in between thus creating that spongy feel. Another attribute of wool is that it is a create insulator of heat due to these curls, making it a great fabric for use in colder climates. Another plus point is that the fabric is stretchable and retains its shape, making it durable and quite resistant to dirt and staining. However, wool is fairly heavy and bulky, so do make sure that you have taken this factor in to account before getting wool for your sewing projects.
